In accordance with the Instructions of the Head of State since 2009 "Western Europe - Western China" international transit corridor is being reconstructed, the length of corridor is 2787 km, of which 2452 km is subject to reconstruction.

The project cost is 825 billion KZT, of which the main part of the corridor is funded by International Financial Institutions such as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency.

During implementation period of 2009-2014 of "Western Europe - Western China"  international transit corridor project reconstruction 1884 km was opened to traffic from the border of the Russian Federation to the city of Shymkent in Aktobe, Kyzylorda and South Kazakhstan regions.

This year, 77 billion KZT has been allocated for project implementation and works are carried out at 14 sections witht the length of 612 km in Almaty, South Kazakhstan and Zhambyl regions.

Traffic throughout the Western Europe – Western China International Transit Corridor is planned to open in 2016.
